The music video for Rihanna’s newest single “Man Down” was recently released and it’s already causing a lot of controversy. The music video shows Rihanna shooting a man in the head. After being shot, he falls to the ground and blood spills from his head. Toward the end of the video, there is a flashback in which viewers learn that the man sexually assaulted Rihanna in the music video. Shortly after the music video premiered on BET on May 31st, the founder of the Enough Is Enough Anti- Violence Campaign called the video “a clear violation of BET’s own programming guidelines.”
The Parents Television Campaign stated that Rihanna had a ‘golden opportunity’ to use her celebrity status to send an important message to young girls and victims of rape and domestic violence with the clip, but had missed the mark. Instead of telling victims they should seek help, Rihanna released a music video that gives retaliation in the form of premeditated murder the imprimatur of acceptability.”
Rihanna quickly fired back on Twitter by tweeting “U can’t hide your kids from society, or they’ll never learn how to adapt! This is the REAL WORLD!” She then fired off another tweet, “The music industry isn’t exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! Its your job to make sure they don’t turn out like US.”
I don’t think that the music video should be banned. The issues that are depicted in the video are things that occur in real life. The video is portraying a message; its not like Rihanna is just shooting someone randomly or using violence just to be edgy. Even if this music video is eventually banned from television, it will still be all over the Internet for anyone to see. I’m sure that kids have been exposed to worse things through the media besides seeing a shooting and encountering a brief sexual scene. The controversy over this song is being blown out of proportion by the media and “Man Down” has potential to be a huge song this summer.
