The second day of Iceland Airwaves 2012 started out with a trip to one of Reykjavík’s local tattoo and piercing shops, Tattoo & Skart. Located right in the heart of the city, owner Svanur Gundrunarson has been running his shop with his wife, Seselia, since 2000. Svanur talked to me about Icelandic tattoo culture and the different trends happening now. Of course tattooing is an old Icelandic practice between sailors and fisherman, so it was interesting when he said that Iceland is somewhat behind in what’s happening in tattoo culture. For instance, Japanese symbols, full arm sleeves, and scarification are just now becoming known in the country.
