This storied rivalry did not disappoint in the 266th meeting between these two schools. These teams are not the biggest fans of each other. On two separate occasions players had to sit in the box for roughing.
The condition of the ice was a problem from the beginning of the Notre Dame – Miami (OH) tilt and by the halfway point of the third period it looked as if it was holding on by a thread. The ice had been used for three days straight with youth camps and practices for all four teams, plus the a skate around with the Chicago Blawkhawks and USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program.
The third and final period…
Minnesota came out and played the exact same as they did for the first two periods but this time pelting Joel Rumpel with shots on goal paid off as Seth Ambroz scored two minutes into the first half of the third period. The goalies switched sides halfway through the period. The Golden Gophers doubled the Badgers in shots on goal but Wisconsin controlled the puck during the first five minutes of the second half in the third period not allowing Minnesota to gain momentum.
Wisconsin appeared to have it all wrapped up at Soldier Field when Minnesota made it interesting, Zach Budish put home a wide open goal with 1:42 left in the game. That made for a frantic final 90 seconds. But Wisconsin was able to hold off their neighbor.
Wisconsin 3 – 2 Minnesota
Miami (OH) 1 – 2 Notre Dame
