A Long Reach for the Chicago Bears?

The Bears have surprised many people this past week when they announced that they would be choosing Oregon tackle, Kyle Long, son of NFL Hall-of-Famer Howie Long. It was a shocking choice, especially with a player like TE Tyler Eifert still on the board.

Some said the Bears made a good pick based on the fact that the Bears need all the offensive line help that they can get, but again, they let Tyler Eifert go who could have been another offensive weapon for Jay Cutler to throw too. It was upsetting, but this tweet gave me some perspective.

Jay Cutler has been sacked countless times (Approximately 153 times in the four seasons with the team) since he joined the Bears.  Up until now the Bears have tried to get some protection for Cutler but have failed. It appears that Bears GM Phil Emery realizes that protecting Cutler is a team effort problem and went out and signed Left Tackle Jermon Bushrod to a deal. Now he drafts Long. While Bears fans often complain about our offensive line, we continue to complain even though it appears that the organization is trying to fix the problem.

The 49ers spent years building their offensive line, and according to Pro Football Focus they have the best offensive line in the NFL. They put up 473.3 total yards, including 218 yards on the ground. All of that starts with protecting your quarterback, which is something the Bears haven’t been very good at.

Phil Emery has been aggressive in building this Bears team during the off-season, so there’s no reason to start doubting him now. Last year he picked up Shea McClellin and that has worked out pretty well. Offensive lines take years to build, and we should give the Bears credit for attacking the line this off-season.The 49ers spent years building their offensive line, and according to Pro Football Focus they have the best offensive line in the NFL. What do you think about the Bears selection of Kyle Long?
