The best football game of the weekend took place between the New England Patriots and the New Orleans Saints. In a game between two of the games premiere quarterbacks Tom Brady & Drew Brees, anything less than drama would have been a let down.
After Drew Brees hooked up with Kenny Stills on a 34 yard touchdown pass to go up 27-23 with 2:46 remaining, the game was slipping away from the Patriots. The game appeared to be completely out of reach after Brady threw an interception after the Patriots offense received the ball back.
Once the Patriots burned their last remaining timeout, the Saints ran the ball the next possession on second down. On third down, New Orleans ran a controversial passing play out of the shotgun resulting in a Drew Brees sack. If the Saints elected to run the ball, they could have killed an additional forty seconds off the clock.
When New England received the punt, they had the ball for seven snaps. After completing 4 of 5 passes for 53 yards, Brady spiked the ball to stop the clock with a little less than ten seconds. On the seventh play of the drive, down 27-23 Brady linked up with rookie wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins for a game winning tip toe touchdown reception in the deep left corner of the end zone. The Patriots would win the game 30-27.
In a battle between two of the best teams in the league and two of the games best quarterbacks, the drama was provided. Brady and the Patriots now move to 5-1 and Brees and the Saints get their first loss of the season and sit at 5-1.
