With the NFL Draft approaching, the number one pick isn’t as clear as it was in years past. This year, the Houston Texans possess the first pick, and it looks like it has come down to two candidates- Johnny Manziel and Jadeveon Clowney.
Houston is one of the more talented teams in recent memory to hold the number one pick. They have multiple Pro Bowlers on their team with J.J. Watt, Andre Johnson, and Arian Foster. However, with all of that talent they only managed two wins on the season. Head coach Gary Kubiak was fired after Week 14. It was an overall disastrous season for a team that was expected to contend for a Super Bowl.
I believe the Texans can turn things around if they select Johnny Manziel with their first pick. Jadeveon Clowney is an athletic freak that is going to succeed at the next level. Who wouldn’t want to pair him with All-Pro J.J. Watt? As tempting as that sounds, this is now a league that is geared towards offense. You need to have a QB that can elevate your team. This is a Texan team that struggled to score with guys like Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates, and Case Keenum under center ranking 31st in points scored.
With new coach Bill O’Brien taking over, Manziel can learn from the same man that tutored Tom Brady. I’m not saying Manziel will be the next Tom Brady, but he can fix all of those accuracy issues. Those are fixable. What you can’t teach is all of the intangibles Johnny “Football” brings to the table. His ability to create something out of nothing, and his will to win as demonstrated in Texas A&M’s 52-48 incredible comeback bowl win over Duke. He provides the Texans with something they have been missing for quite sometime and that’s a leader. The Texans have that opportunity to change that franchise around in one season. Will they pull the trigger?
