Icelandic Culture Preview: Reykjavík Takes Initiatives To Help Homeless (Listen)

We’re heading to Iceland Airwaves! Students enrolled in the Radio Department’s Covering International Festivals: Iceland course will travel to Iceland to cover the festival, Icelandic culture and more, beginning Nov. 5.  Follow their journey here. Check out a preview story below.

Homelessness runs rampant throughout major cities like Chicago and New York City, but have you ever wondered how it affects smaller-scale urban areas, such as Reykjavík, Iceland?

Tune in to hear Erla Björg Sigurðardóttir (Head of the Dept. of Research and Quality for Reykjavík’s social services) and Arnar Gylfason (a city guard in Reykjavík who curated the Homeless Art Show at Reykjavík City Hall) discuss some of the initiatives that are being taken to bring about change for the homeless population, or “Outsiders,” in Iceland.
