Iceland Airwaves Reflection (11/10)

Upon arrival at Midway airport I started freaking about the plane ride. Being one of my biggest fears, I manned up, held onto my chair and dealt with the fear. After an entire day’s worth Southwest and IcelandAir flights, I had finally arrived in Iceland.

Starting out I was extremely overwhelmed, stressing out about daily blogs,  interviewing sources and producing an Icelandic cultural documentary. But after 20 hot dogs at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, $400 down on my debit card, and knocking back coffee straight from a full pot, it ended up being one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I have made friends here I know I will have forever.

When coming to Iceland, the number one thing I was most ready for, besides being able to see a concert every day, was stepping outside of my comfort zone. There is only one thing I cannot eat, and that is seafood.  I told myself every day before November fourth that I was going to suck it up and truly experience the Icelandic culture. I can now say I have tried whale, puffin, cod, salmon and lobster. Once I return home to the states and my family, I can brag about my new love for seafood.

On the last day of the trip, we finally made up our minds about going to see the Northern Lights. Being one of the coldest nights of the week, we stood on the side of the street, looked up for a couple hours and got to see a green glow in the sky. Underneath the shooting stars and the most gorgeous night sky, this trip has been the greatest experience of my life. It was so worth getting on the plane and overcoming my biggest fear.

Well we’re back from six days in Reykjavík and already missing those delicious hot dogs and the overwhelming amount of great live music. We wanted to remember our trip to the Iceland Airwaves 2013 Music Festival through a series of photos, from takeoff on Icelandair in Newark, NJ (their second flight from that airport) on through the vast array of bands, food and experiences we encountered, which are revealed through the above slideshow. Enjoy!
